My wife is Indonesian and thinks I'm nuts for tipping. then she sees the results when we go back to a restaurant of hotel and the people treat us like VIP's! These people make miniscule salaries and bend over backwards to make our stay/meal extraordinary. It's nice to do something for them. I'm on my way to Balian tomorrow (roadtrip from Bojonegoro, East Java) and am packing extra t-shirts that I don't wear and other assorted gear just to give away to people less fotunate than ourselves. Greart postings! Valuable info for all concerned...

Hi,

I loved everybit of your blog and have found it to a great advantage, I am from South Africa (also third world Country)and a great believer in tipping everyone, so good to hear from a handfull that feel the same. Keep up the good work of promoting the underprivileged. We will be visiting your lovely Island in October 2009, and will be in your area between 25th and 31st October, still looking for accommodation, have enquired but not yet found what we are looking for in the price range we can afford, oh yes your blog said ask for a cheaper rate, I will however not put you on the spot so will tell you what we are able to afford and you can decide whether This is acceptable or not by responding to my e-mail address. The amount we can afford and budgeted for on our holiday for accommodation is IDR 2000,000.00 double with breakfast. Please can you let us know if this is acceptable and whether you will be able to accommodate us for 3 nights during this time. As we travel very light but can bring over 20kg each, can u advise me what I can bring over that will help, even one or two families, I have old clothes, will that be helpful, I have always on our previous trips never thought the people would want our old clothes as things are so cheap there, can u think of anything not too heavy that we can bring, we always bring sweets for the kids and buy dog food while there for the strays. It would be so nice if you can give us some other suggestions, I follow the Buddist teachings so one of my strong points is loving kindness and compassion, respect and still practising on my anger. Oh yes how about pens, pencils and colouring books for the kids would that be good?

Please let me hear from you even though you cannot accommodate us with a room?

Regards and best of luck.
